From June 6th to 12th, the 2013 seminar on Optimization and Statistics hosted by Institute of Fundamental and Interdisciplinary Sciences of Beijing Jiaotong University, College of Mathematics and Physics of Beijing University of Technology, The Mathematical Programming Branch of OR Society of China and Pacific Optimization Research Activity Group was held at Beijing Jiaotong University.
Professor Wang Jinde of Nanjing University and Professor Xue Yi of Beijing University of Technology were invited as chief speakers for 2013 seminar. With Optimization and Statistics as its core, the lecture included Statistics Optimization model, algorithm and software. Attendees of seminar included over 120 doctoral students, instructors, associate professors and professors from more than 60 national colleges and universities in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hebei, Henan, Shandong and Guangzhou. participants benefited immensely during the 5-day seminar,.
ICOS 2013 was held at Mechanical Engineering Conference Center of Beijing Jiaotong University after the seminar. With Statistics Optimization as its direction, this conference aimed to discuss the research and development of Statistics Optimization as an interdisciplinary subject. The COPSS President Award-winner Professor Cai Tianwen (University of Pennsylvania, United States), International Optimization expert, Professor R. T. Rockafellar (Washington University, United States), Professor Stan Uryasev (Florida University, United States), Professor Chung Piaw Teo (National University of Singapore), Professor Zhu Lixing (Hong Kong Baptist University), Professor Yuan Xiaoming (Hong Kong Baptist University), Professor Wang Zhaojun (Nankai University), Professor Geng zhi (Peking University) and Professor Guo Jianhua (Northeast Normal University) gave special reports in the meeting.
Professor Cai Tianwen, the world famous Statistics Scholar, pointed out in his report: “We are now in a Big Data age, Statistics is becoming more and more important. As the solution of many issues in Statistics requires the knowledge of optimization, direction of Statistics optimization has great prospect in future development.” During the conference, experts in statistic and optimization addressed respective research focuses and possible interdisciplinary cooperation. The present professors and students conducted enthusiastic discussions on topics of interest, all of which contributed to the active atmosphere of the meeting.
The success in holding both the seminar and the conference enabled internationally acclaimed scholars and experts convene, communicate and convey their opinions. Its smooth procession hugely accelerated the intersection and fusion of statistics and optimization and designated the course of future research. The intimate and intense communication between professors and participants is of great significance in nurturing mainstay researchers in the area of Statistics Optimization.
